Explore what Condé Nast Traveler claims is “One of the top 10 islands in the world.” Bicycles are a great way to see the island! Without a car in sight, you can ride completely around Mackinac Island along scenic M-185, an eight-mile, level highway. The roundtrip can be done in an hour, or a little more, when you take breaks along the way at the beautiful outlooks (or the fudge or ice cream shops downtown!). Leisurely riders snap photos at each mile marker along M-185. Others enjoy creating their own architectural tour past the Victorian gems perched along the East and West Bluffs. But almost everyone’s favorite trip around the island is when the sun begins to set.
More adventurous riders enjoy taking M-185 to the British Landing historical marker. Follow British Landing Road into the Island interior, past the 1814 battlefields and cemeteries to Fort Mackinac, then down to the water’s edge.
Avid bicyclists handle the more strenuous ride up Scott’s Road to paved bike trails on the Island’s interior. This stress-releasing tour takes you through Mackinac Island’s boreal forest. Follow Leslie Avenue to one of the island’s geologic wonders, Arch Rock, then wind your way back to downtown.
Extreme cyclists get an adrenaline rush climbing Cadotte Avenue’s Grand Hill to paved, gravel-packed and dirt trails in the interior. The reward is some of the most incredible encounters with nature.
