More boats, more room ... less worry
Arnold Transit Co. is world-renowned as one of the best passenger ferries to Mackinac Island. But transporting vacationers to this Lake Huron paradise was not the beginning of our history. In 1878 we started as a freight service — and every year since we have helped to make life easier, healthier and more comfortable on the Island.
Handled with care... delivered on time. The freight we ferry across today is crucial to island residents, visitors, businesses, conventions and weddings. So we carefully load and unload each shipment. Once it arrives on the island, horse-drawn drays stand along our extra-wide dock ready to take your freight to its next destination on time.
Reasons to choose Arnold Freight
FOUR TIMES as many boats as our competition! We operate four freight boats to transport freight between our St. Ignace and Mackinac Island docks. That means we can accommodate more freight, more often, to get it there when you need it.
Nine-month season. Typically our St. Ignace freight ferries run until mid-January. We resume runs, once the straits are ice free, in April. However, check with us if you need to get freight across in the winter months. If the straits aren't frozen, we keep making trips.
Competitive rates. Our crew runs a tight, efficient shipping service to keep your costs in line. You'll find below our freight and corsair rates.
Dray line works directly off our docks. There's less handling between the boat and our on-time, door-to-door delivery.
Two refrigerated semi-trailers come across daily to our Arnold Mackinac Island dock. They keep meats, produce, dairy and frozen products fresh until they are delivered to nearby restaurants and markets.*
Arnold is the exclusive transporter of the United Parcel Service (UPS) truck to and from Mackinac Island. UPS knows they can count on us to get your packages safely across for on-time delivery, Monday through Friday. But don't expect to see a UPS truck pull up curbside on the Island. Our UPS carrier delivers by horse and wagon, of course!
Horses ride Arnold, too. Our freight ferries carry up to 30 pleasure or draft horses at a time to the island in the spring and back across in the fall. Ever wonder where the horses stay during the winter? Check out our FAQs.
Worry free. From houses to crystal wine glasses, our ferries safely transport the things you need to operate your business, entertain your conventioneers or enjoy your time on Mackinac Island. For specific information about our freight services or to arrange shipment, contact us by e-mail or give us a call at (906) 643-8288 — business hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
*NOTE Vehicle permits must be obtained from the City of Mackinac Island and from the Mackinac Island State Park. For more information, please call the City of Mackinac Island at (906) 847-3300 or FAX at (906) 847-0344. Call Mackinac Island State Park at (906) 847-6607.
